THEY RAN FROM HER

They ran from her

Too skittish to converse

As though she needed their bank accounts

When all she desired

Was a reminder

Of how beautiful she was

That moment, that day, that month

Which in the life a young woman

Is so precious, so vital

That to piece out loving focus

For 10 minutes or more

Could mortally wound the ego

Which transcends femininity some days

Enough so to make her ignore him

Let him walk by –

Adonis never less, pointless

She lives in a self-induced lulla-bye

Sleeping through the morning

To emerge even more lovely than ever at 6

Ready to dance

And not ask why

Or how long or how many

Or any other avenue of encroachment

On her pure privacy

As in, you may look

You may, touch if asked

But don’t assume assent

For anything more than that –

She spins her hips just so

As to sail to another hemisphere

            And leave you cold

            Remember the pure heat

Of her breath on your teeth
