ACROSS THE STREAM
We rode out to the shore
Mercenaries of happiness
Willing to be set free
Just a perfect kiss for the fare
And off we went to ecstasy
Without benefit of pills or potions
Just the chemistry of the mind
And the physics of sex
As in the application of inertia
And once we were in motion
We stayed in motion
Did not apply brakes –
Did not say, “This is over”
No we held on to each other
As we held on to youth
Held on to Love
Held our humanity in our arms
Yes, babies, hers
Something really hers
But more fundamentally, ours
Fruit of labor
Proof of commitment
Able to slough off the others
Able to see Heaven before the trees
We stand now, in sole possession
Our finest hour
The transition
Another pair and their wishes
We are sentiment
We are the ancestors
Stopping in mid-stream
With the realization
That I am a stepping stone across. 201225.1
