HE SMILES

There she was

So alluring

Posing

So we went down the rabbit hole

Chasing unleashed hormones

As if free pawns loosed upon the world

Needing to find solace

Before the flood

            Well, we didn’t.

            Just re-appeared as ordinary citizens.

If you make it to 70, oh so nice.

            If 80, twice the nice

But only if healthy and free of burdens

            Illness, disability, poverty, afflictions

So that even if un-fulfilled at some level

            The life was good

            And lasted full measure

For what is a body without torment?

We wait in the sun for a brief moment

Knowing full well the chill of night

The freezing of the bones

The concentration on pain.

Then we escape

Some of us for a lifetime

But remember life is finite –

in fact, brief.

You barely understand why we seek God

And then, boom . . . his hand.

            Dumbstruck at the miracle

            We watch the baby emerge

            Bright as a dessert morning

He smiles and takes in the love
