YOU WAKE

You wake

You keep asking

As if there was to be an answer

So tricked by ego

As to believe worthy

And so you ask

For health, love, companionship, freedom

And many of the myriad desires

That inflict and contaminate

            So one day you hear

            Ah, a voice

            Familiar to yours

            Perhaps a slightly incarnate version

            Tone and timbre familiar

            Delivery moderate

            And simple, unadorned

            Unable to be misinterpreted

And the words are “help yourself”

Then why ask?

If the answer is so clear

You can’t keep asking can you?

In order to hear the same answer?

Why is the logic so familiar?

Where have you heard this?

From childhood on

Every day in many ways

All the natural world

Illustrates this answer daily

Repeated in every animal

Taught self-sufficiency

No dependent beggars anywhere

Those humans that do

May be subject to repeating suffering
