TO THE WOMAN WHO MIGHT WANT YOU
To the woman who might want you
You are either a great, “fill in the blank,”
Or you are not
And if you are not
Then who would she be
If she were tied up with you?
And if you are arguably not the best
At whatever this thing is
Why should she commit to you
On some failing enterprise?
But if you have full throated confidence
That someday you will be the best
Or close to it
Or a reasonable facsimile
Then perhaps some others will believe it
And within that success
Others may develop
As in the theatre
As old as the stage itself
The audience, her
Is susceptible to the suspension of disbelief
And the passion and presence
Of a man seeking, expressing and hoping
For a deep and personal friendship
Is persuasive
It is gripping
And she cannot let go
As it is life itself that holds her –
The sight of a child
With an amused and wise smile –
Fills her with a sense of meaning
And it isn’t even her child, yet
