TO THE WOMAN WHO MIGHT WANT YOU

 

To the woman who might want you

You are either a great, “fill in the blank,”

Or you are not

And if you are not

Then who would she be

If she were tied up with you?

            And if you are arguably not the best

            At whatever this thing is

            Why should she commit to you

            On some failing enterprise?

            But if you have full throated confidence

            That someday you will be the best

            Or close to it

            Or a reasonable facsimile

            Then perhaps some others will believe it

            And within that success

            Others may develop

As in the theatre

As old as the stage itself

The audience, her

Is susceptible to the suspension of disbelief

And the passion and presence

Of a man seeking, expressing and hoping

For a deep and personal friendship

Is persuasive

It is gripping

And she cannot let go

            As it is life itself that holds her –

            The sight of a child

            With an amused and wise smile –

            Fills her with a sense of meaning

            And it isn’t even her child, yet
