THERE IS CERTAINLY A COST TO ATTACHMENT

There is certainly a cost to attachment

The loss of the person

To whom one feels bonded

Seems a tear in the body fabric

A wound open

Blood let

How to suture the arteries

That flowed between you

Those connections your upbringing foretold

How to see and focus on the products

That union formed

Children of genes and environment

Of which parents largely define

            What is danger?

What is a proper expenditure of time?

            What is physical contact

And when is it pleasure or pain?

They must be the future

Along with a re-defined mood

Not expected solace or sympathy

From anyone more than once

That becomes a norm

Discard it before it hurts

Walk along like any other individual

            Including children not yet parents

Knowing we are each ultimately independent

No soldier or nurse riding in

To fix the wages of life –

            Seek to age gracefully.

            What other choice?

            Focus on what is

Before less of that is left
