STAY SILENT

Stay silent

Brazen crow in the dying oak

Partners with sparrows

Which dart and squawk beneath hungrily

            He has visited these limbs

            For nearly fifty years now

            As we count them

            Knowingly he glides away

            On the next gleaming updraft

Bearing him skyward

Where his thoughts can form

Empty of any connection

Unattached for hours

            Able to see patterns below

            Patchworks of cloth

            Forming outlines of man

            His duties and obligations

Machines rolling along

Carrying the fortunate

While the devil bends the back

Of the poor

            Who cannot save

Who dream of fully clothed ecstasies

            Diamond studs

            And golden boots

Enough money to rest and eat and splurge

Just once enough to purge

The ghosts of hunger and want

Take a shady break

At the Maui Ritz

            Home for supper

            As soon as smoke rises

            From need and hunger
