SILENT DREAM

Silent dream

Comes to mind once more

We float along the shore

Seeming to barely

Touch the damp sand

Our arms graceful wings

Our hearts pound as one

The end of the beach

Still far out of sight

The loneliness of the ocean

Felt by its endless yearning waves

Seeking rocky boulders to lash out at

To seek evisceration in salt spray

Disappearing into sunny sky

Our sense of belonging to each other –

            A shared life –

            Remains in my consciousness

            As our children grow

And find their own loves and lives

In a vast and changing world

Where I am the remainder –

The element of survival and consistency

The laughter in an empty room

Discoveries of things you left behind –

            Things never seen clearly before

            Become voices from the past

Recalling the events, the smiles, the kisses

Shared by a pair of fortunate souls

Who knew the rare air they breathed together

Having once ran the shore alone

            And recalling the remarkable difference

When our minds sought the same goals
