SHE NEVER RETURNS
“Alone again,” the song begins
Then the lyrics unfold
After the intro gets their attention
Because all the listeners know “alone”
They have felt it
Even when surrounded by others
They feel it when they wake
Even with someone nearby
Sometimes more alone when with someone
Than when unaccompanied
Sometimes the barrier
Of lack of communication builds
And whatever is said doesn’t cross over
“Once we were” the song continues
Into the verse
And the singer gets to fit in
All the phrases of love
And the sensations involved –
The soaring heart
The warmth of her body
The intensity in her eyes
How her voice melts
The coldest night
Until the last line
And then the bridge –
The one designed to shift the song
And allow it to complete itself
With a return to the last verse
But this bridge is too abrupt
Too much a shift in mood and tone
Until like this state of alone
She never returns
