IF YOU GET TO RUN THE TABLE

If you get to run the table

A second time

See all over again

Through your child eyes

Sense the newness, beauty and joy

More fully felt

Than the first time

Now you see the speed of change

How we must propel ourselves

To keep up with the rate of growth

One day a little boy

Seeming the next, a teen

And all you can do is watch and love

Advice, here and there

A winter passes

Each year a whole new world

And the parent feels it all again

But smiles as these wonders abound

Leaving us empty down the stretch

Knowing that what is past is gone

Never to be revisited in daylight

            But available to be recollected

            Should the need arise

            And when it does

            A wistful sense of remembrance

            Passes through the body

Knowing what a great life is

            Because you had one

And that is all that can be done

            Leaving expectation adrift

            Slowly separating from the ship

            Which sails on
