It happened
Right under our noses
70% to prevent embarrassment
To the reputation of the U.S. of A.
20% to prevent benefit to the North Vietnamese
And 10% to help the people of South Vietnam.
And this all at the feet
Of a corrupt democrat from Texas
Senator, now President, Lyndon B. Johnson
Who lied over and over
About the change in the mission
Claiming we were only support
For South Vietnamese troops
And did not conduct independent battles
Did not bomb North Vietnam
Except in limited raids
When in fact it was a main strategy
Escalating via Westmoreland’s requests
And McNamara’s acquiescence
And only one Advisor
Gave him correct truth
And thus the old man caved
Fell into defeat
Stumbled back to his ranch
Drank himself to death
A longhair, of all things, at the end
As though Dr. John The Nightripper
Had laid an Owsley tab on him
Waiting for the truth to win out
And thus decades hence
We devolve into Iraq
Imbedding ourselves in a region
