A level mix

All things do not bring pain

Nor can you hold happiness forever

A constant flux

Joy, pain, distress

Those you consider yours

Spouse, children, possessions

Can bring some joy

But always bring some pain as well

We can fight to hold onto one or the other

Or we can accept the vacillation

Reveling in those periods of well-being

Being OK with underlying presence

Of dissatisfaction, fear and worry

            You can spend decades

            Meditating to eliminate

            All traces of suffering

            Walk peacefully and sleep well

            Give what you can

            Help someone else now and then

            Be calm in the face of the storm

            Move forward

            Keep moving on

Along the way the decades have built

A life with enough periods of joy

Enough moments of miracle recognition

Enough fragments of God glimpsed

That it ends as a worthy life

With benefit to the world in some way

And no Yogi or doctor or government

Can ever make it smooth and shiny.

Only you can bring the glow
