MIDNIGHT BLUE

Cost of attachment

Born each day

A rising sun

A missing lady

Gone to the wilderness

Where the body can’t follow

A restless soul left behind

Watching meteors split

And stars collide

So far up in nighttime sky

            They burst, I am sure

But I can’t hear them cry

            Like tears that fall

            With no audible sigh

            Somehow part of nature anyhow

Like the way we all wonder why

            When love is swept away

            And yet there you are

Unable to see your smile returned

No echo of “I love you”

As you head out the door

No waiting beauty to welcome you home

And yet there is no benefit in anger

            No pay-day for remorse

            Just aftershocks

            Which come and go anyway

            Resentment or not

Mercy must come to those who endure

Feeling they must have another duty ahead.

Perhaps needed again.

Perhaps a seemingly familiar smile

Will meet those midnight blue irises
