JEWELS & PROMISES
Here’s a little secret for ya –
Would-be mega-star capitalist
A-list influencer
Mogul, C.E.O., Barrister
Titan of Wall Street
Or Don of Sunset Boulevard –
You don’t spend it
You just have it
With your one body
Its failings universal
The frailties, the vacillations
The genes break down –
You may have a billion dollars –
But you will be lucky to walk at 80
Without the pain
The bum feels at 2:00 a.m.
On a cold sidewalk
Shielded with cardboard
Even though ensconced in a golden bell
Overlooking the Bay
With deliveries on the way –
Still just human
Born to die rich
And where does it go? –
Back to the state from which it came
And to heirs
Too numerous to name.
And then to future capitalists
To sell the inheritors
A piece of old fish –
Encrusted with jewels and promises –
But, what else is new?
