I MUST HEAR BETTER

We lift off and recount the adventures

Bright afternoons on wooden floors

Blankets sliding under tables and chairs

Races across playgrounds and open fields

Baseball, football, fishing and skiing

Indoor hoops all winter long

After two games you are Miami heat

Draining shots from fall-a-way threes

To gliding one-handed dunks

Taking off from 12 feet

Full speed, under control

Slowed slightly, power in escaping gravity

Momentarily, as a young man

You can soar in mid-air

Land far-away

After feeling flight

And taking it to bed

There to dream higher, farther and faster

Until the eyes open wide

Seeing that nothing is shut

Much less vision

And that insight is God-conscious thinking

Acted out through the body

It’s verbal manifestations

It’s potential for polar effects

Driving optimism or regret

Not a choice made easy

Until the gravity pulls

And the cartilage fails

To fully insulate body from impact

But now I see all about me

Affected by my tone of speech

Thus, older, I best hear myself better
