HAS IT BEGUN?
Within the murmur of the crowd
Shuffling down the sidewalk
Their conversations leak out
Disclosing time and distance
How far they have come
To exist right next to you
On this day, year and moment, intersecting
And why you hear a thousand voices –
Personality expressed in tone and pace –
Mental patterns apparent.
Connecting words of the annoying kind –
“Like” and “Right”
Comprising the entirety of the sentence
With a “cliché” inserted
Appropriate to the diverse, ethnic nature
Of the listening entity.
Often recorded on the ever-present “phone”
Which is the ultimate umbilical –
Ever-present, invisible –
Controls by being essential
Providing every answer
An app for every need.
And the feed –
Where does it come from?
Who chooses the algorithm
Is it A.I.?
A committee; a board, a government?
Could it be another “country”
And what could be their harmful goal?
Are we waiting out the days
Until the cyber-wars commence?
Will we ever know if they have begun?
Trust our Press Secretary to tell us?
