FREE SOULS
Let’s sing for those free souls
Who catapulted across the lawn
Figments of a Spring dream
When boy and girl beam bright
Into a lover’s eyes
Hoping for full acceptance
Willing to accept less
But needing a partner
Through this dusty mess
A mate of consequence
Who takes seriously
This quest of life
Which offers only a slippery paw
To grab onto
As the train whistles by
Never pausing to look at you
Never caring, much less amending
Any cause involving you
So you sign on for a promise
Never to regret the passing of the day
Fully aware of consequence
Prepared to pass away
Quietly, without complaint
No begging for more time
To pose with Excalibur
Pretending to conquer time
Or linger in sublime
Night and a cold fever
Swallows the land
A breeze from China
Carrying a deadly sneeze
And we worry about the falling equities
