FIRES IN THE DARKNESS
Sitting full-eyed
In the front seat
A gape at the wonders passing by
If I had not tasted life complete
Could be tempted beyond discreet
Yet today the world is secure
In that I have no fear
Of coming blank verse announcing a search
For another of these lives unfurled
No demand for another love
To procure and nurture
No compulsion to beat the world
At the game of rapture
Probable cause to think of nature
And know the end points of birth and death
Not attempt to leap
Over yet another forest
Despite the bleak blackness of loss
No competition so desirous
No beauty so compelling
To allow another youth
For the one who has lived it
Maybe a branch to hang on
To suspend over the chasm and pretend
To lay with stars of love
Again shining in eyes next to me
To believe perfection
Can be achieved in harmony
Until the lightening finds me
Cracks the limb that holds me
Fires the darkness
With an eternal glow
That seems to come as her eyes close
