FAR BEHIND
They held to life
No food, no fat
Before gaping ovens
Called them at last
One more prayer
For a just God
That would stop the madness
Reach far beyond
The grasp of human justice
Far harsher than death
Some inner fear
That could strike them after breath
Had ceased its constancy
Had left them defenseless
One wish
For the evil to suffer
Those who inflict
Those who dole out the pain
Those woes of cancer
That seem to strike the innocent
Pursuing danger again and again
Let us escape
And walk away
One more breath
One more wholesome meal
Enough to last us
Until the end of evil
When we walk among the joyous
Who have crossed over
Entered our world of light
Leaving smoky mirrors and blood
Far behind 160225.2
