Where all the memories conflate

Well, when you are on the sidewalk

Any St. or Avenue

East side, West Village, far Rockaway

Out to Hamptonville by the sea

You are subject to search

By the local dignitaries

And their duly appointed mercenaries

Seeking a government pension

The gold bell on the fleece the system “scale” –

A misused word today –

Denoting bigger, better, more capitalization

Implying power, innovation and completion.

Yet the more “scale” is talked about

The more “niche player” rings astute

As if knowing something really well

Would separate pretender from master.

Show without equivocation

That any letter addressed

With the admonition “return to sender.”

Would not survive the high-tech X-gen-er.

Because once you press “send”

There is no retrieval

            And thus “scale,” once voice

            Is empty because it was sought overtly
