EMPTINESS WHERE YOU ONCE WERE
Why don’t you just sit right down
And pretend everything is perfect
All touchpoints attended
Necessities provided
Health improbably good
While the evening rolls on
In syncopated joyous beats
One moment after another
Knowing love
Having had success extended
And children good and strong
Just lean back and feel
The blood of a happy man
As it brings its nutritious supplies
Mending everything eventually.
Learning to feel satisfied.
Why go on asking for more?
Isn’t the present enough?
Why ask for promises or odds?
Let the future unfold of its own accord
Finding peace in the luck of the draw.
Impatient world keeps insisting
Wanting more
More production, more purpose, more effort
And the calm man looks ahead
Seeing what is in store –
Not imagining a barrier before it appears
And when the fearsome roar is heard
The tiger who is always hungry
Who cannot be out-run
Who launches himself
May find emptiness where you once were
