DREAMING OF ANOTHER
Defined as much by age
As by circumstance
Body maintains
Balancing nourishment and exertion
Finding near-stasis with the environment
Actualizing itself with health and survival
Which the mind computes
Finds reasons to calculate an end point
Even to the far reaches
Of previous experience
Yet somehow visualize a distant future
So far away as to be nearly disregarded
A semblance of normality preserved
Distant memories arise spontaneously
Able to be re-lived in a moment
Then tossed, so much used tissue
In a basket to be recycled –
Brought back again when needed
Perhaps to stem a negative flow
Or enhance a brilliant afternoon
Perfectly still for a moment or two
Immersed in the essence of a memory
Immune to disturbance
A silence descends
An imminent sunset looms
Its red streaks against a blue sky
Portend hope despite loss
Encouraging a bit more energy
The body continues
The mind dutifully follows
Watching for danger
While dreaming of another love
