DREAMER’S EYE
Dusks hushed purples hum along
Casting an eerie light
On what seems a dream scene
Where the streets climb hills
Amid garish Chinese lanterns
With the clatters of the trolley
Its bell eager and jolly
Contrasting with the light haze
From the fires blaze
That burns to the north
Sending tentacles
In a smoky plume
That transcends the bright melody
Altering the mental state
Of the dreamer walking with me
Yes, it is! It’s Ellington’s “a train”
That lovely refrain
Catapulting the vision back to New York
Running through the village
Basketball palmed
Ready to sprint and dunk
Or shoot the three from out of bounds
Or cast a smile on a lovely waitress
Trying out for her first Broadway hit
Or the danger who stepped into my life
Until the beauty who became my wife
And walks hand in hand
Up and around this magical island
Where humming birds wing by
At the most interesting times
To whisper a prayer for love
