AT THE READY

 

It rained down on us occasionally

That we were certainly blessed

And that along the way

Had taken it as certainty

That these fortunate circumstances

Could not be taken away

And that abundance and security

Were somehow the birthright

If you originated in the U.S. of A.

            It seemed obvious from history class

            That it was the magnanimous generosity

            Of the post WWII America

            That rebuilt the world economically

            And led the intellectual effort

            To institute a valid democracy

            Which we were sure would translate

            Into a peaceful cooperative world

Yet the dismal conditions prevailed

In pockets of the world

Already overcrowded and resource challenged

And the dictators were empowered –

Russia, China have rulers for life –

Centralized economic and social decisions –

Focused on one man –

Frail, fat, ugly, without redemptive value –

Yet dictator as the people bow –

Then invade

Then imprison

Then they kill

And before you know it

The peaceful world is on fire

With nuclear rhetoric

And intercontinental missiles at the ready
