Demands to comply
Hours, dates, locations, transit and message
Forming a structure
A series of function
Individual plugged into a role
Replaceable, for the most part
Except those unique personality traits
Which can become more and more submerged
As years pass and days devoted mount
Until complete immersion in the role
Hamlet actor becomes Hamlet
After twenty years of performing
Thinking he is as clever as Shakespeare
Because he recites the lines
And hears people call him Hamlet
And the Judge thinks he is the law
Because he cites it in his rulings
And the farmer believes God hears him
As he prays for rain day after day
And when the drought goes on
He must have earned disfavor.
But the world stops someday
And there is no role
No structure or demands
“Just live” – they say solemnly
While inside the heart beckons
The eyes well-up with gratitude
And all that reverberates
Is the hunger for more sweet life
