A CITY STRANGLED

BY DROOPING SPIRITS

A city strangled by drooping spirits

Do-gooders prevail at the polls

Voters churned out by State employees

Businesses picked to win or lose by politicians

Eager to gain control

Over every venture

Sanctioning the non-compliant

Rewarding political backers

Taking control of transportation systems

Pouring billions into pet projects

Finding employees now work from home –

Oops, half of the commuters gone.

Oops, half of the stores gone

How archaic – brick and mortar –

Just deliver –

Just deliver a life.

Central planners retire at full pay.

Politicians pontificate until they die –

So in control of the system

         They install memorials to themselves

         And stay in Congress

         With mental and physical frailties

         In deeply selfish modes.

Clinging to their genes

Sensing optimism from their genetic core

Citizens walk on

Deciding to make the best of it

Stepping around narcotized bodies

Avoiding possible confrontation

Empty storefronts winking back at them

As if to say – “some day!”

And the parents walk on.
