ACCEPT ALL EFFORTS AT GOOD WILL
You called and left a message
“The furniture has arrived”
But I had not sent it
So the devious went to work
And found a reason
But it was not conducive
To a pleasant life
Nor would it allow
For gentle graces
To flow from your delicate embraces
Which shiver me still
Just the thinking, the memory, the anticipation
Until there was just one of us
And you were with me
Quite closely
Leaning near my ear
An Eleanor to my Franklin
Amelia to Charles
Jackie to Jack
And Monroe to everyone else
We are romance
We watch the same shows
News that was fiction
Fade into background vocals
Soaring for a moment
Then respecting their place
Returning to the line
The back of it
As befits one who would malign
Jesus, Buddha or any well-intended man
Better to accept all efforts at goodwill
Than reject all but the most perfectly timed
